abstract = "This work investigates the seasonal variability of the mixed layer
depth (MLD) in the Abrolhos and Vit{\'o}ria-Trindade region based
on sea winds derived from the QuikSCAT scaterometer and numerical
model outputs generated by the Parallel Ocean Program (POP) model
                         from 1999 to 2003 in the region between 13ºS-23ºS and 44ºW-28ºW. A
combination of horizontal maps of wind speed, wind-stress curl and
Hovmoller diagrams are used to address this issue. Wind speeds of
5 to 6.6 m/s were found during summer season, while during
wintertime, the speed of the wind reached values from 6.6 to 8.4
m/s. The summertime MLD derived from POP varied from 10 to 20
meters, whereas the wintertime MLD reached depths down to 100-125
meters. Based on the analysis of the wind stress curl, it was
expected that positive values would induce upwelling, whereas
negative values would be an indicative of downwelling. The results
showed positive values all season-round during the period of
study. A good agreement between positive wind stress curl and
upwelling were observed during spring. However, north of ~15ºS
during the autumn-winter of 2000, autumn of 2001 and 2003, the
curl of the wind stress was negative. Our results suggested that
the depth of the mixed layer could be driven by other forcings
instead of being purely related to the dynamics of Ekman in the
                         area of study.",
